ARETE: Lent Featuring CAWF Headmaster Jose Silva

This month's Arete features Chesterton Academy of Wichita Falls Headmaster Jose Silva at 6:30 PM Sun., Jan. 28 in the Parish Hall Upstairs Great Hall. The whole parish is invited to attend ARETE: Pursuing Virtue and Authentic Religious Education in Truth and Excellence. It meets the fourth Sunday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Great Hall. A different topic will be will be presented during each session.

A coordinating activity for children in first grade through sixth grade is available in the parlor.

Arete (Greek: ἀρετή) means “excellence” or “virtue.” In its earliest appearance in Greek, this word was related to the notion of the fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s full potential. The ancient Romans used the Latin word virtus (derived from vir, their word for man) to refer to all of the “excellent qualities of men, including physical strength, valorous conduct, and moral rectitude.” A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good and pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions. The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God.
