ARETE
ARETE meets the fourth Sunday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Great Hall. A different topic will be will be presented during each month.
All are invited to attend, while the RE Sacrament families are requested to attend.
Arete (Greek: ἀρετή) means “excellence” or “virtue.” In its earliest appearance in Greek, this word was related to the notion of the fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one’s full potential. The ancient Romans used the Latin word virtus (derived from vir, their word for man) to refer to all of the “excellent qualities of men, including physical strength, valorous conduct, and moral rectitude.” A virtue is a habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good and pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions.
"The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God."
St. Gregory of Nyssa
